Splenomegaly

Introduction to Splenomegaly

The condition of splenomegaly is characterized by an abnormal increase in the size of the spleen, which is a crucial organ located at the left upper part of the belly. There are several causes that can lead to this condition. Some examples include infections, blood diseases as well as cancers.

Splenomegaly may produce different signs and symptoms such as pain or discomfort in the stomach or abdomen; early feeling of fullness when eating and easy bleeding or bruising due to reduced platelet count. To efficiently manage and treat splenomegaly, it is important to find out its cause.

Sometimes diagnostic tools like physical examination, imaging studies including ultrasound or CT scans and blood tests are used to determine what has caused splenomegaly and how bad it is. Different treatments depend on treating the root cause of this condition which might involve medication, lifestyle changes or sometimes severe cases require surgical intervention for example removal of spleen commonly referred to as splenectomy.
