Introduction to Colon Cancer

Malignant growths that invade either colon or rectum are colorectal cancers also known as colon cancers. The entire large intestine comprises these types of disorders starting with abnormal growths formed by cells along its surface.

In the colon, cancer is frequently formed by polyps that are small and benign on the inner lining of the colon or rectum and can become cancerous if untreated.

Several risk factors have also been identified for colon cancer including; age (risk increases with age), a family history of colon cancer or polyps, personal history of inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, diet high in red or processed meats, obesity, smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption.
