Introduction to Rectal Cancer

Rectal Cancer occurs in cells lining the rectum which is final part of large intestine before anus.

This is one form among other types of colorectal cancer whose rates vary worldwide. The etiology behind it involves multiple factors with many risk elements inclusive of old age demographics, genetic predispositions as well as an unhealthy lifestyle such as high intake of processed meat with low dietary fibre contents sedentary life-style physical activity inadequate regular exercises leading to body weight gain excessive smoking and too much intakes of alcoholic drinks.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis may increase risk for rectal cancer.

Rectal Cancer

- Rectal Cancer are classified into Upper / Middle / Lower Rectal cancer

- Early detected disease are cure with surgery only

- Lower rectal cancer may need Neoadjuvant CTRT followed by surgery in case of nodal disease

- per rectal examination / sigmoidoscopy can give diagnosis

- MRI pelvis can do staging
