Small bowel cancers pose significant challenges in diagnosing them because they are relatively uncommon among other gastrointestinal tumors. They arise from the small intestine appearing in various forms such as adenocarcinoma; sarcoma; lymphoma; carcinoid tumours among others.
Most often it goes undiagnosed until its late stages when abdominal pain due to tumor growth bleeding into intestines over time causing blood in stools and weight loss for no reason can be mistaken for other conditions or ignored as mere gastrointestinal issues.
Moreover, the small bowel is located at deep within the abdomen further complicating early identification.
