Introduction to Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the gastrointestinal tract, leading to inflammation anywhere from the mouth to the anus but most often in the small intestines and beginning of the large intestines.

This condition usually undergoes periods of flare-ups and remission during which you have mild to severe symptoms. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss fatigue but complications such as intestinal strictures fistulas or abscesses may also arise.

Exactly what causes Crohn's disease is unknown; however it is thought that there are genetic factors involved in susceptible individuals combined with some environmental triggers that cause an inappropriate immune response.
